Madrid was a town created by DONREPANOCHA on 10 October 2014, during the Second Era. Prior to this, Madrid had existed as one of the most important towns of the First Era. The importance of Madrid would not fade during the Second Era, as it became one of the largest and most recognized towns on the server.
History[]
First Era[]
Madrid would be founded by MarkusRabbit in the First Era. Eventually, leadership of the town would be given to DONREPANOCHA. DON would be forced to move the town to South America over conflict with Lisbon, where the town would eventually be founded again during the Second Era.
Second Era[]
Rebirth[]
After the reset, DONREPANOCHA created Madrid in Uruguay. From there, the town would join the nation American Dominion, and later the Wolfcoast Empire.
Conflict with Chicago[]
Within its first week, Madrid faced conflict. Chicago had built an unauthorized fort near Madrid, and tensions between the two towns escalated after Madrid accused members of Chicago of killing their sheep. Chicago then started attacking Madrid, but with the help of London and other towns, Madrid was able to successfully drive them out. Both sides eventually reached an agreement that allowed Chicago to build a trade outpost near Madrid. However, an unknown griefer destroyed Chicago's war boats at the trade outpost, leading to TheLuapian griefing Madrid in retaliation. Tensions remained high between the two towns for the rest of the era.
Growth and tensions with the Great Federation[]
During its first few weeks, Madrid experienced significant growth, particularly in its population. Madrid would also be invited to rejoin the newly recreated Ecumenical Empire (ECU). At this time, the ECU was experiencing tensions with the Great Federation, which would lead to the Federation launching a surprise attack on Madrid, destroying some movecrafts. F1sh98, the leader of the Great Federation, refused to provide any explanation for the attack. This incident further exacerbated tensions between the Federation and the ECU, and many other nations began to harbor resentment towards the Federation.
World War III[]
The ECU would hold elections to for the leadership of the nation, in which Madrid would win with more that 50% of the vote. While in the process of reorganizing the nation, the Great Federation would once again attack Madrid, claiming the town was to be its capital. The Federation was able to force their way into Madrid Square, before being forced back by an anti-Federation coalition in a battle that would last four hours. This battle would become known as the Battle of Madrid.
After Madrid was reclaimed, the anti-Federation coalition made their move against F1sh98, directly attacking Mendoza. The Federation's allies quickly started to abandoned F1sh98, and it was reported to staff that F1sh98 had somehow obtained a creeper spawner, resulting in his being banned. After appealing the ban, F1sh98 would return to Mendoza being completely destroyed, and would once again be banned, this time personally.
Post-World War III[]
Madrid experienced a golden age following the war, with a booming economy and new developments. To secure resources, Madrid established a colony in Ireland, led by Governor Zero_Crazy. Additional facilities were added for citizens, including a public plumbing system created by Ultrarazor14.
Madrid also developed an international diplomatic system to avoid wars, which was successful, and contributed to the peace and stability of the entire ECU.
Decline[]
During April and May, many of the old and important players on the server, such as OwlCharles, Xexekeli, Dimavr2, Atchy_SK, and LantaCrafterS, left. Additionally, a glitch that came to be known as the Great Towny Glitch of 2015 wiped Madrid and it had to be reclaimed. Although Madrid lost 45 citizens due to the glitch, it was able to regain 10 of them within a couple of days, proving that it is still the most active and populated town on the server. However, very little development was made following this event, and Madrid was never able to fully recover. The town would finally disappear following the end of the Second Era.
The Town[]
Madrid was the largest town in the Second Era and was situated around a bay called Madrid Bay, which was formed by the River of Silver. The bay divided the city into two parts, the modern part and the ancient part. The ancient part, located in the north of the bay, was the main part, while the modern part was situated in the south. The streets in both areas were large, and Madrid was even considered to be the town with the biggest streets. MarkusRabbit Avenue was the largest street, spanning almost 20 blocks. The avenue ran through the town, primarily in the ancient part. A bridge built by TheCarlagas linked both parts of the town.
The city had important facilities, including the Metro de Madrid subway system, the Litter Pipe which linked the entire town with the recycling center, the Madrid International Airport, and Madrid University.
Architectural Style[]
Madrid had various architectural styles, with some main styles and a high degree of variety. The Spanish Empire style, which was prevalent in the 16th and 17th centuries, was mainly orange in color, and towers were commonplace. The City Hall was the best example of this style. The Castilian style, which originated in the Low Middle Age and 15th century, was characterized by austere stone portals. Examples of this style included the Madrid College and the Enchanting Hall. The neoclassical and borbonic style, which was prominent in the 18th century, featured large buildings made of stone and stone bricks. The Madrid Bank and the Palace of Salubrity were examples of this style.
